We provide after-school remedial academic assistance to children and adolescents with educational deficiencies. This assistance consists of individualized basic skills instruction in the areas of reading, mathematics, and writing. We also provide a virtual learning center to assist children and adolescents with remote learning.
In addition to child and adolescent educational services, we provide behavioral training to community stakeholders, behavioral health professionals, and all individuals who may benefit from behavioral health education. Our behavioral health trainings can be provided virtually or in person.
Our Academic Café is for children and adolescents who require additional assistance with virtual learning. The program strengthens remote teaching by providing face to face supervised educational and behavioral health support during school hours. In addition to instructional support, the program offers after school remediation and structured group activities to promote healthy social peer engagement. The program consists of a classroom-like setting where youth view their teachers virtually.
Program Policy: The Academic Café is managed by a licensed behavioral health professional who meet the provider qualifications policies, procedure, and standards established by DMH/DD/SAS and the requirements of 10A NCAC 27G. Support staff will have experience in behavioral health or education demonstrated by academic degree, certification, or verifiable work experience. All staff will have first aid and CPR certification. The Academic Café is open to children and adolescents who reside in grades K-8. High-schoolers are considered based on functioning level and behavior.
Program Procedure: The Academic Café will operate Monday through Friday from 8:00am to 3:00pm. Students will utilize their computer provided by their school system, unless otherwise directed by the school’s system board of education or school. Students will meet with their teachers as scheduled and participate in structured social group activities to promote healthy peer engagement. Students will receive educational and remedial support when deemed appropriate by their teacher. Students will have their temperature checked each day prior to entering the learning environment. Students with temperatures above 98.5 will not be granted entrance. Students may bring their own lunch or receive a catered lunch provided by the program.
